Dr. Jian Xu is an assistant professor in Louisiana State University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Yale University in USA. He conducts interdisciplinary research on medical instrumentation for image-guided cancer surgery, including both open and minimally invasive surgery. Specifically, he designed and optimized a medical fluorescence camera system (for both visible and near-infrared windows imaging) and a spectroscopic device (for both Raman and fluorescence imaging) to help surgeons quantitatively distinguish cancerous tissues from normal tissues intraoperatively. The medical devices designed by his group have been put into clinical studies in several major hospitals in USA. These devices are used to identify pancreatic cancer, laryngeal cancer and oral cancer intraoperatively. His findings result in 24 publications, 4 of which were selected as the cover page articles of the issue, on renowned peer-reviewed journals in the field and 3 patent applications. He has also served in the editorial boards of four other academic journals.
