Dr. Simkins was born in Utah but has lived across the United States. He earned his bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology at Boise State University in Boise, ID. He then moved east to attend Michigan State University where he earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience and environmental toxicology as well as a medical degree, D.O. He completed a Neurology residency at UC Davis Medical in Sacramento, CA and was elected to Chief Resident of Education in his final year. Given his interest in neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis, he gladly accepted the opportunity for Multiple Sclerosis/Neuroimmunology Fellowship at the Portland VA in conjunction with Oregon Health and Science University. He is a published author in the fields of cannabinoids/marijuana, neuroimmunology, and Parkinson's Disease. Currently, his research endeavors are directed at understanding the mechanisms of oligodendrocyte biology in the development, maintenance, and repair of myelin in the central nervous system.
