De Krebs-cyclus

Cellular respiration uses the TCA cycle, also called the Krebs cycle, to help cells make usable energy from organic molecules. This pathway is a central part of aerobic respiration and also supports biosynthesis. It links the breakdown of food molecules to the cell's energy needs.

Pyruvate from glycolysis enters this process first. The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA through oxidative decarboxylation. This step produces one NADH and one carbon dioxide molecule. It also connects glycolysis to the TCA cycle.

Acetyl-CoA then enters the Krebs cycle in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells or the mitochondrial matrix in eukaryotic cells. It combines with oxaloacetate to form citrate and starts a sequence of enzyme-driven reactions. During the cycle, two carbon dioxide molecules are released. The cycle also produces three NADH, one FADH2, and one GTP or ATP, depending on the organism. Oxaloacetate is regenerated at the end so the cycle can continue.

The TCA cycle also provides building blocks for other cell processes. α-ketoglutarate and oxaloacetate can be used to make amino acids. Aspartate and glutamate, which come from TCA intermediates, help support purine and pyrimidine synthesis. Citrate can move into the cytoplasm and be converted into acetyl-CoA for fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis.

Some bacteria and fungi use a different route called the glyoxylate cycle when carbohydrates are scarce. This pathway skips the carbon dioxide-releasing steps of the TCA cycle with the enzymes isocitrate lyase and malate synthase. It allows acetyl-CoA to be turned directly into four-carbon compounds such as succinate and malate. These compounds help refill oxaloacetate and support biosynthesis. This adaptation lets microorganisms use acetate or fatty acids as major carbon sources in low-nutrient conditions.
