Nanosecond Laser

A nanosecond laser is a pulsed light source that emits laser energy in bursts lasting billionths of a second, enabling precise delivery of high peak power with limited thermal exposure between pulses. Its operation depends on amplifying light and releasing it in short pulses, where absorbed energy can produce localized heating, melting, vaporization, or controlled ablation according to the material and pulse conditions. In bioengineering, nanosecond lasers support micromachining, surface patterning, and processing of biomaterials, implants, and microdevices. These capabilities help researchers tailor surface properties, fabricate small-scale structures, and investigate how engineered materials interact with biological systems.

Source: Han, J., et.al. Regulating Schwann Cell Growth by Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field for Peripheral Nerve Regeneration In Vitro. J. Vis. Exp. (2024)This video demonstrates the application of the nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) technique to modulate Schwann cell (SC) growth. The rapid electric pulses induce transient nanopores in SC membranes, facilitating calcium influx that activates signaling pathways driving SC proliferation, dedifferentiation, and neurotrophic factor...

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
