Contractility Kinetics

Contractility kinetics describes how the force-producing activity of biological cells or tissues changes over time, including the speed, magnitude, and duration of contraction. In muscle and other contractile systems, chemical or electrical stimulation alters intracellular calcium levels, which regulates actin–myosin interactions and produces measurable changes in force, shortening, or motion. Analyzing contraction onset, peak response, relaxation, and recovery helps characterize cellular function and tissue mechanics. These measurements support research in muscle physiology, cardiac biology, developmental biology, drug testing, and disease modeling by revealing how genetic, environmental, or pharmacological changes affect contractile performance.

The Contractile Ring

2023

Contractile rings are composed of microfilaments and are responsible for separating the daughter cells during cytokinesis. Contractile ring assembly proceeds along with other cell cycle events; however, very few mechanistic details are known about the timing and coordination of the contractile rings with the cell cycle. A small GTPase, RhoA, controls the function and assembly of the contractile ring. RhoA belongs to the Ras superfamily of proteins. The activation of formins by RhoA promotes...

This video demonstrates the surgical preparation and procedures needed to study the contractile responses of the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle preparation in situ. This preparation allows measurement of skeletal muscle contractile properties under physiological conditions. The animal is anesthetized and the muscle is separated from surrounding tissue at its distal end. The Achilles tendon is attached to a force transducer, allowing measurement of the muscle’s contractile response at 37...

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

2020

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...
