Descending Aorta Access

Descending aorta access is a surgical or catheter-based technique used to reach the thoracic or abdominal portion of the aorta for biological research, diagnosis, or intervention. Access typically involves advancing a catheter through an arterial entry site, such as the femoral artery, and guiding it under imaging toward the descending aorta, or surgically exposing the vessel when direct access is required. This approach enables blood sampling, pressure measurement, contrast delivery, device placement, and localized vascular procedures. In experimental biology, it supports studies of hemodynamics, vascular injury, organ perfusion, and cardiovascular disease while requiring careful control of bleeding and vessel trauma.

This paper presents a flow cytometry-based method to investigate the immune composition of aortas. The paper also illustrates an additional technique that allows examining surrounding adventitia and vessel wall separately. This method opens possibilities to perform phenotypical analyses of aortic leukocytes and apply several immunological assays for atherosclerosis studies.
