Mea Recording

MEA recording, or multielectrode array recording, is an electrophysiological technique that measures electrical activity from many cells or tissue sites at the same time. An array of closely spaced electrodes detects extracellular voltage changes produced when excitable cells, such as neurons or cardiomyocytes, generate action potentials; the signals are then amplified, filtered, and digitally analyzed to assess activity patterns. In biology, MEA recording reveals network connectivity, firing rates, synchrony, and propagation of electrical signals without requiring intracellular access. It supports studies of neural and cardiac physiology, disease mechanisms, drug effects, and engineered tissues, enabling quantitative analysis of complex cellular networks.

Electrophysiological characterization of cardiomyocytes derived from human Pluripotent Stem Cells (hPSC-CMs) is crucial for cardiac disease modeling and for determining drug responses. This protocol provides the necessary information to dissociate and plate hPSC-CMs on multi-electrode arrays, measure their field potential, and a method for analyzing QT and RR intervals.

A robust way to study neuronal avalanches, i.e. scale-invariant spatio-temporal activity bursts, indicative of critical state dynamics in cortex. Avalanches emerge spontaneously in developing superficial layers of cultured cortex which allows for long-term measurements of the activity with planar integrated multi-electrode arrays (MEA) under precisely controlled conditions.
