Peristalsis

Peristalsis is the coordinated, wave-like contraction of smooth muscle that propels contents through hollow organs, especially the gastrointestinal tract. In the digestive system, the circular muscle layer contracts behind a bolus while the region ahead relaxes, with longitudinal muscle activity helping shorten and advance the intestinal wall; the enteric nervous system coordinates this pattern. Peristalsis moves food from the esophagus through the stomach and intestines, supporting digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste elimination. Studying this process helps explain gastrointestinal motility and disorders in which propulsion becomes too rapid, too slow, or poorly coordinated.

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Gastrointestinal disease accounts for millions of office visits and hospital admissions annually. Physical examination of the abdomen is a crucial tool in diagnosing diseases of the gastrointestinal tract; in addition, it can help identify pathological processes in cardiovascular, urinary, and other systems. As physical examination in general, the examination of the abdominal region is...

We describe an in vitro protocol to co-culture gut microbiome and intestinal villi for an extended period using a human gut-on-a-chip microphysiological system.

Intravital Visualization of Gamma Delta Intraepithelial Lymphocytes

This video demonstrates the visualization of γδ intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in transgenic mice using confocal microscopy. The surgical procedure involves creating a perforation line and making a longitudinal incision to expose the intestinal mucosa and villi. The transgenic mice express reporter proteins exclusively in γδ IELs, allowing their tracking. Intravital imaging captures the dynamic movement of green fluorescence-labeled γδ IELs along the intestinal epithelial cell's basement...
