Viral Recovery

Viral recovery is the biological process through which an infected organism controls or eliminates a virus and restores normal tissue function. It begins with innate defenses that limit viral replication, followed by adaptive immune responses in which antibodies and T cells target infected cells and viral particles; damaged tissues then undergo repair as inflammation subsides. Understanding viral recovery helps researchers assess immune protection, evaluate antiviral treatments, and distinguish clearance of infection from persistent or recurrent disease. In biology, recovery studies also inform vaccine development and clarify how host factors, viral characteristics, and immune memory influence the duration and outcome of illness.

Noroviruses are a major cause of gastroenteritis yet molecular techniques for their characterisation are still relatively new. Here we report two different reverse genetics approaches for the efficient recovery of murine norovirus (MNV), the only member of this genus which can be propagated in cell culture.

An approach was developed for identifying optimal viral concentration conditions for small volume water samples using spikes of human adenovirus. The techniques described here are used to identify concentration parameters for other viral targets, and applied to large-scale viral concentration experimentation.
