Rat Brain Cortex

The rat brain cortex is the outer layer of the brain’s cerebral hemispheres, where organized networks of neurons and glial cells support sensory processing, movement, learning, and other higher functions. Its layered architecture enables communication through synaptic signaling, while interactions between cortical cells, extracellular matrix, and blood vessels influence tissue responses to injury and disease. In cancer research, cortical tissue and rat models help investigate brain tumor growth, invasion, treatment effects, and tumor-associated changes in neural and vascular environments. These studies can clarify neuro-oncology mechanisms and support evaluation of therapies that must protect or penetrate the brain.

2025

This video demonstrates a stereotactically-guided surgical procedure for ablating the auditory cortex in a rat. The steps include identifying anatomical landmarks in an anesthetized rat secured in a stereotactic frame, creating a window on the skull above the auditory cortex, aspirating the cortical layers, and providing post-operative care to assess the impact of the ablation on sound processing.

Source: Blanc, J., et al. Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy at 7 T in the Rat Barrel Cortex During Whisker Activation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the method of analyzing metabolic changes in the rat barrel cortex using functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy during whisker stimulation. Baseline metabolite spectra are compared with stimulated spectra to detect lactate increase in the barrel cortex, confirming successful neuronal activation.
