Mesodermal Cells

Mesodermal cells are cells derived from the mesoderm, one of the three primary germ layers formed during embryonic development, and they give rise to much of the body’s connective, muscular, circulatory, skeletal, and urogenital tissues. During gastrulation, coordinated cell movements position mesoderm between the ectoderm and endoderm; signaling pathways and transcription factors then establish regional identity and direct differentiation into specialized cell types. Studying mesodermal cells helps explain tissue patterning, organ formation, and congenital disorders, while cultured mesodermal progenitors and stem-cell-derived counterparts support research on cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal regeneration, developmental mechanisms, and potential cell-based therapies.

Generation of Dispersed Presomitic Mesoderm Cell Cultures for Imaging of the Zebrafish Segmentation Clock in Single Cells

Somitogenesis is a rhythmic developmental process that spatially patterns the body axis of vertebrate embryos. Previously, we developed transgenic zebrafish lines that use fluorescent reporters to observe the cyclic genes that drive this process. Here, we culture dispersed cells from these lines and image their oscillations over time in vitro.

Isolation of embryonic neural crest from the neural tube facilitates the use of in vitro methods for studying migration, self-renewal, and multipotency of neural crest.

Deriving Human Kidney Podocytes from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells: A Procedure for Directed Differentiation of Mature Kidney Podocytes from Stem Cells

2023

In this video, we describe the protocol to derive human kidney podocytes from induced pluripotent stem cells through cell differentiation under defined chemical conditions. The generated podocytes can be used for nephrotoxicity testing and disease modeling.

Metastatic Cancer Cell Colony Isolation from Chicken CAM: A Procedure to Isolate Cancer Cells from Shell-less Egg Cultures

2023

In this video, we describe the isolation of metastatic cancer cell colonies from the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) using shell-less egg culture. This method helps screen for factors that may be responsible for cancer metastasis.
