Bone Healing Analysis

Bone Healing Analysis is the systematic evaluation of how a fractured or surgically repaired bone progresses from injury to restored structure and function. It examines the coordinated stages of healing, beginning with inflammation and hematoma formation, followed by soft and hard callus development and prolonged bone remodeling; clinicians assess these changes through physical examination and imaging. In medicine, this analysis helps determine whether healing is proceeding normally, identify delayed union or nonunion, and guide treatment decisions. It also supports research into fracture fixation, bone grafts, biomaterials, and therapies designed to improve skeletal repair and patient recovery.

Micro-computed tomography (µCT) is a non-destructive imaging tool that is instrumental in assessing bone structure in preclinical studies, however there is a lack of consensus on µCT procedures for analyzing the bone healing callus. This study provides a step-by-step µCT protocol that allows the monitoring of fracture healing.
