Functional Exercise Capacity

Functional exercise capacity is the ability to perform physical activity required for daily life or sustained exertion, making it an important indicator of overall health and recovery. It reflects the integrated performance of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems as they deliver oxygen, generate movement, and maintain effort under physiological demand; clinicians commonly quantify it with standardized tests such as the six-minute walk test or cardiopulmonary exercise testing. In medicine, these measurements help characterize limitations in conditions including heart and lung disease, evaluate response to treatment or rehabilitation, estimate functional prognosis, and guide individualized exercise recommendations.

Lung Capacity

2019

The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures. There are four defined lung volume measures: tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in a normal breath. Inspiratory...

Muscle Function Obtained with Motion Mode Ultrasound and Surface Electromyography during Core Endurance Exercise

This protocol uses motion mode ultrasound and surface electromyography simultaneously to measure muscle function of the core. Muscle thickness and activation of the local stabilizers (e.g., transverse abdominis, internal oblique) and global movers (e.g., external oblique) is achievable during specific time points of the side plank and dead bug exercises.

This protocol describes the electromyographic fatigue threshold which demarcates between nonfatiguing and fatiguing exercise workloads. This information could be used to develop a more individualized training program.

Dual Test Gas Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity Measurement During Exercise in Humans Using the Single-Breath Method

This protocol presents a method to assess pulmonary alveolar-capillary reserve measured by combined single-breath measurement of the diffusing capacity to carbon monoxide (DL,CO) and nitric oxide (DL,NO) during exercise. Assumptions and recommendations for using the technique during exercise form the foundation of this article.
