Lc-ms Lipid Analysis

LC-MS lipid analysis is an analytical technique that separates and identifies lipids in biological samples, making it important for studying metabolism, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic responses. Liquid chromatography first resolves lipid species according to properties such as polarity and hydrophobicity, while mass spectrometry ionizes the compounds and measures their mass-to-charge ratios; tandem MS can further confirm structures through characteristic fragmentation patterns. In medicine, this approach supports lipidomics, biomarker discovery, and investigation of pathways involved in cardiovascular disease, cancer, inflammation, and metabolic disorders. It also enables researchers to compare lipid profiles across patients, tissues, or treatment conditions with high molecular specificity.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.
