Recurrence Rate

Recurrence rate is a measure of how often a disease, condition, or clinical event returns after remission, treatment, or an initial episode, making it important for evaluating long-term outcomes in medicine. Researchers calculate it by following a defined patient population, identifying new episodes that meet a prespecified recurrence definition, and relating those events to the number of patients or the time observed. Recurrence rates help compare treatments, identify factors associated with disease return, guide follow-up strategies, and support patient counseling. Accurate estimates depend on consistent case definitions, adequate follow-up, and clear distinction between recurrence, persistence, and a new condition.

Most studies of herpetic corneal disease use a primary infection model. However, primary infection with HSV-1 does not typically lead to human disease. Here we describe a recurrent model of herpetic corneal disease, which more closely mimics human disease.
