Renal Parenchyma Resection

Renal parenchyma resection is a surgical procedure that removes a localized portion of kidney tissue while preserving as much functioning renal parenchyma as possible. During the operation, the surgeon exposes the affected region, controls renal blood flow when necessary, excises the diseased tissue, and repairs the remaining kidney to limit bleeding and urine leakage. Most commonly performed as nephron-sparing surgery for selected renal tumors, the procedure can maintain renal function more effectively than removing the entire kidney. Understanding its anatomical principles, surgical technique, and potential complications is important for planning treatment and improving outcomes in urologic medicine.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...

We describe the manufacture of compressed hormone pellets, as well as subcutaneous surgical implantation into mice. This strategy can be combined with the growth of cell and tissue xenografts under the renal capsule of athymic nude mice to evaluate hormonal carcinogenesis and regulation of benign prostate growth.
