Mouse Inner Ear

The mouse inner ear is the specialized sensory organ that detects sound, head movement, and balance-related signals, making it an important model for studying auditory and vestibular neuroscience. Within the cochlea and vestibular labyrinth, sensory hair cells convert mechanical vibrations or fluid movements into electrical signals that travel through auditory and vestibular nerve pathways to the brain. Researchers use the mouse inner ear to investigate neural circuit development, sensory processing, hearing and balance disorders, and the effects of genetic or environmental changes. Its anatomical accessibility and well-characterized genetics also support imaging, electrophysiology, and evaluation of potential therapies for sensory loss.

Canalostomy for Local Drug Delivery into the Inner Ear of an Adult Mouse

2025

This video showcases canalostomy, a procedure that allows local drug delivery into the inner ear of a mouse through the semicircular canal with minimal damage to hearing and vestibular function. This method enables the inoculation of viral vectors, pharmaceuticals, and small molecules into the mouse's inner ear.

Isolating Vestibular Ganglion Neurons From a Mouse Inner Ear

2025

This video showcases a method for isolating vestibular neurons from a mouse pup's inner ear. It meticulously outlines the steps involved in dissecting the inner ear, harvesting the vestibular ganglion, and subsequently dissociating the ganglion into single cells. These cells are then cultured on glass-bottom dishes to establish a vestibular neuron culture.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...

Gene Transfer to the Developing Mouse Inner Ear by In Vivo Electroporation

The mouse inner ear is a placode-derived sensory organ whose developmental program is elaborated during gestation. We define an in utero gene transfer technique consisting of three steps: mouse ventral laparotomy, transuterine microinjection, and in vivo electroporation. We use digital video microscopy to demonstrate the critical experimental embryological techniques.
