Neonatal Mice

Neonatal mice are newborn or very young mice used to study early postnatal development, when the nervous system undergoes rapid structural and functional change. During this period, neuronal differentiation, migration, synapse formation, myelination, and sensory-circuit maturation alter how neural networks process signals, making age-dependent responses experimentally measurable. In neuroscience, neonatal mice support research on brain development, neurodevelopmental disorders, injury, inflammation, sensory processing, and behavior. Their small size, rapid maturation, and compatibility with controlled laboratory experiments allow investigators to connect cellular mechanisms with circuit function and evaluate interventions during defined developmental windows.

2012

Measuring left ventricular pressure (LV) in embryonic and neonatal mice is described. Pressure is measured by inserting a needle connected to a fluid-filled transducer into the LV under ultrasound guidance. Care must be taken to maintain normal cardiac function during the experimental protocol.

Modeling Infection in Neonatal Mice Using Encapsulated Bioluminescent Bacteria

Source: Seman, B. G., et al. A Neonatal Imaging Model of Gram-Negative Bacterial Sepsis. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)The video demonstrates a neonatal mouse model for studying systemic infection using encapsulated bioluminescent bacteria. Neonatal pups are injected with high- or low-dose bacterial suspensions and returned to their mother for postnatal care. The encapsulated bacteria evade early immune detection, spread systemically, and are visualized over time using luminescence imaging. This model...

Myocardial Infarction in Neonatal Mice, A Model of Cardiac Regeneration

This protocol describes a highly reproducible model of cardiac regeneration by surgical induction of myocardial infarction in the left ventricle of postnatal day 1 mice. The method involves induction of hypothermic anesthesia and ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery.

We have developed a novel and reproducible technique to isolate primary cultures of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) from mice as young as P7, thereby allowing better study of the signaling pathways involved in neonatal smooth muscle cell contraction and relaxation.

Spinal Cord Neurons Isolation and Culture from Neonatal Mice

This study presents a technique for the isolation of neurons from WT neonatal mice. It requires the careful dissection of the spinal cord from the neonatal mouse, followed by the separation of neurons from the spinal cord tissue through mechanical and enzymatic cleavage.
