Neural Network Activity

Neural network activity is the coordinated electrical and chemical signaling that enables interconnected neurons to process information and generate brain function. Neurons produce action potentials when membrane voltage reaches threshold, then release neurotransmitters at synapses that excite or inhibit neighboring cells; the balance, timing, and connectivity of these signals shape activity patterns across circuits. In neuroscience, researchers measure these dynamics with electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and computational analyses to study sensation, movement, learning, memory, and disease. Characterizing network activity also helps reveal how disrupted communication contributes to epilepsy, neurodegeneration, and other neurological disorders, supporting improved models and therapeutic strategies.

Assessing the Effects of Toxins on Chick Embryo Neural Network Development Using Multielectrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the use of multi-electrode arrays (MEA) to study the effects of toxins on early embryonic chick neuronal cultures. By monitoring the synchronous activity of the neurons in the neuronal network, the MEA captures the functional dynamics of the neuronal network in response to toxin exposure. Reduced synchrony and firing rates upon toxin exposure highlight its detrimental impact on neuronal network maturation and function.

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.
