Surgical Drill

A surgical drill is a powered instrument that uses a rotating cutting tool to remove or shape bone with controlled precision, making it essential for procedures involving the skull and spine. Its motor drives interchangeable burrs at selected speeds, while controlled pressure and irrigation can help manage bone removal and heat generation near delicate neural tissue. In neuroscience and neurosurgery, surgical drills support craniotomy, skull-base access, spinal decompression, and preparation for implant placement. Their precision helps surgeons reach targeted anatomical regions while limiting unnecessary bone disruption, although careful technique is required to protect the brain, spinal cord, blood vessels, and surrounding structures.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

(2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...
