Alveolar Sacs

Alveolar sacs are clusters of microscopic air spaces at the ends of the bronchioles, where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it. Their extremely thin epithelial walls lie beside dense capillary networks, allowing gases to diffuse across the respiratory membrane down their concentration gradients; pulmonary surfactant reduces surface tension and helps keep these spaces open during breathing. In biology, studying alveolar sacs clarifies how ventilation and circulation work together to support cellular respiration. Their structure and function also provide a basis for understanding conditions such as emphysema, pulmonary edema, and impaired gas exchange.

Here we describe the model and approach to study functions of pulmonary alveolar macrophages in cancer metastasis. To demonstrate the role of these cells in metastasis, the syngeneic (4T1) model of breast cancer in conjunction with the depletion of alveolar macrophage with clodronate liposomes was used.

Alveoli and Alveolar Ducts

The respiratory zone of the human body, which stands in contrast to the conducting zone, comprises the structures that actively participate in the exchange of gases. The initiation of this zone is marked by the terminal bronchioles converging into respiratory bronchioles, the tiniest bronchiole classification. The respiratory bronchioles give way to the alveolar ducts that opens into a congregation of alveoli. Actively involved in gas exchange, alveoli resemble tiny sacs similar to clusters of...
