Oxygen-limited Environment

An oxygen-limited environment is a habitat or physiological condition in which oxygen availability is insufficient to support typical rates of aerobic metabolism, shaping how organisms survive and function. In biology, reduced oxygen limits mitochondrial respiration and ATP production, prompting cells to adjust gene expression, increase anaerobic metabolism, and regulate processes such as blood flow or respiration through hypoxia-responsive pathways. These environments occur in stagnant water, deep soils, sediments, tumors, and animal tissues, where they influence microbial communities, development, disease progression, and ecosystem nutrient cycling. Studying oxygen limitation helps researchers understand adaptation, cellular stress, and biological responses to changing environmental conditions.

Limiting Reactant

2020

The relative amounts of reactants and products represented in a balanced chemical equation are often referred to as stoichiometric amounts. However, in reality, the reactants are not always present in the stoichiometric amounts indicated by the balanced equation. In a chemical reaction, the reactant which gets consumed first, and limits the amount of product formed, is the limiting reactant, while the other substance becomes the excess reactant. An excess of one or more reactants is often used...

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and low-frequency TMS (lfTMS) have been demonstrated to be major contributors to brain literature. Here we highlight the methods for investigating the cortical correlates of self-deception using TMS.

Stoichiometry, Product Yield, and Limiting Reactants - Concepts

Chemical equations represent how a chemical reaction proceeds from reactants to products through physical or chemical change using chemical formulas. Stoichiometry is a term that describes the relative quantities of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. It is based on the Law of Conservation of Mass, which is a fundamental law that states that matter is neither created nor destroyed. Quite simply, the number and identity of reactant atoms must equal the number and identity of product...

The Number e as a Limit

The number e is a fundamental constant in calculus, playing a central role in describing continuous change, particularly exponential growth. It is most naturally defined through its relationship with the natural logarithm, which is the inverse of the exponential function with base e. This relationship allows e to be characterized using basic principles of differentiation rather than as an arbitrary numerical constant.A key property of the natural logarithm function, ln x, is that its derivative...
