Mouse Kidney

The mouse kidney is a paired organ that filters blood, regulates fluid and electrolyte balance, and provides a tractable model for studying renal biology and disease. Its nephrons perform filtration through the glomerulus, followed by selective reabsorption and secretion along the renal tubules, processes that maintain homeostasis and shape tissue responses to injury. In cancer research, mouse kidneys support investigation of renal tumor development, tumor–microenvironment interactions, and treatment effects using genetically engineered models, transplantation approaches, and drug studies. Findings from these models can clarify disease mechanisms and guide evaluation of potential therapies for kidney cancer.

In this report we describe a method for the isolation and culture of the progenitor cell niche from the embryonic mouse kidney that can be used to study signaling pathways regulating stem/progenitor cells of the developing kidney. These cultured cells are highly accessible to small molecule and recombinant protein treatment, and importantly also to viral transduction, which allows efficient manipulation of candidate pathways.
