Respiratory Signal Acquisition

Respiratory signal acquisition is the measurement and recording of breathing-related activity, producing data that describe respiratory rate, airflow, chest motion, or gas exchange. Sensors such as airflow transducers, pressure sensors, strain gauges, and gas analyzers convert physiological changes into electrical signals that are sampled, filtered, and synchronized for analysis. In cancer research, these signals help characterize pulmonary function, account for breathing motion during thoracic imaging and radiotherapy, and evaluate respiratory effects of tumors or treatment. Reliable acquisition supports reproducible experiments, improves motion-aware interpretation of biological measurements, and can contribute to safer, more precisely timed interventions.

2023

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut An electrocardiograph is a graph recorded by electric potential changes occurring between electrodes placed on a patient's torso to demonstrate cardiac activity. An ECG signal tracks heart rhythm and many cardiac diseases, such as poor blood flow to the heart and structural abnormalities. The action potential created by contractions of the heart wall...

Acquisition and Semi-Automated Analysis of Respiratory Muscle Surface Electromyography

2025

Here, we describe a protocol to record and analyze respiratory electromyography (EMG) signals. It includes the anatomic references for placing the EMG electrodes over several respiratory muscles, removing electrocardiographic noise from the EMG signals, and acquiring the EMG root mean square (RMS) and onset timing of activity.
