Platinum Electrode Preparation

Platinum electrode preparation is the process of cleaning, conditioning, and shaping platinum surfaces for reliable electrochemical measurements and reactions. Mechanical polishing removes oxides, particles, and adsorbed contaminants, while chemical or electrochemical treatments can restore a reproducible surface and stabilize its response; thorough rinsing helps prevent carryover between experiments. In chemistry, well-prepared platinum electrodes support consistent electron-transfer studies, cyclic voltammetry, electrodeposition, and catalytic investigations. Careful preparation improves signal quality, reduces experimental variability, and allows changes in current or potential to be interpreted in terms of the solution or reaction rather than uncontrolled surface contamination.

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.

Existing approaches for constructing chronically implantable peripheral nerve cuff electrodes for use in small rodents often require specialized equipment and/or highly trained personnel. In this protocol we demonstrate a simple, low-cost approach for fabricating chronically implantable cuff electrodes, and demonstrate their effectiveness for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in rats.
