Liver Imaging

Liver imaging is the use of noninvasive techniques to visualize hepatic structure, blood flow, and disease-related changes, supporting diagnosis and treatment planning. Ultrasound forms images from reflected sound waves, while computed tomography uses x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals; contrast agents can enhance vascular patterns and focal lesions. In immunology and infection research, these methods help identify abscesses, inflammation, biliary complications, and immune-mediated tissue injury, while enabling monitoring of disease progression and response to therapy. Imaging also guides targeted procedures and complements laboratory testing, microbiology, and histopathology in evaluating complex liver disease.

Stable intravital high-resolution imaging of immune cells in the liver is challenging. Here we provide a highly sensitive and reliable method to study migration and cell-cell-interactions of immune cells in mouse liver over long periods (about 6 hours) by intravital multiphoton laser scanning microscopy in combination with intensive care monitoring.

The ability of metastatic clones to colonize distant sites depends on their proliferation capacity and/or their ability to survive in the host microenvironment without significant proliferation. Here, we present an animal model that allows quantitative visualization of both types of liver colonization by metastatic clones.
