Feature Pyramid Network

A Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) is a deep-learning architecture that represents visual information at multiple spatial scales, making it valuable for analyzing medical images containing structures of different sizes. It builds a bottom-up hierarchy of convolutional features, then uses a top-down pathway and lateral connections to combine high-level semantic information with finer spatial detail. In medicine, FPNs support object detection and image segmentation tasks such as locating lesions, identifying anatomical structures, and characterizing abnormalities in radiological or microscopic images. By preserving both context and localization, this multiscale design can improve recognition of small or irregular findings and strengthen computer-assisted diagnosis.

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...

Protein Networks

An organism can have thousands of different proteins, and these proteins must cooperate to ensure the health of an organism. Proteins bind to other proteins and form complexes to carry out their functions. Many proteins interact with multiple other proteins creating a complex network of protein interactions. These interactions can be represented through maps depicting protein-protein interaction networks, represented as nodes and edges. Nodes are circles that are representative of a protein,...
