Muscle Performance Analysis

Muscle performance analysis is the quantitative assessment of how effectively muscles generate force, power, movement, and endurance. It combines measures such as strength testing, joint torque, contraction speed, range of motion, fatigue, and sometimes electromyography to evaluate neuromuscular function under controlled conditions. In medicine, these assessments help identify weakness, monitor recovery after injury or surgery, characterize neuromuscular disorders, and guide rehabilitation or training programs. Repeated testing can reveal changes in performance over time, support individualized treatment decisions, and provide objective outcomes for clinical research on mobility, function, and physical performance.

Exercise and Muscle Performance

Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises. Endurance exercises Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Zebrafish are an excellent model to study muscle function and disease. During early embryogenesis zebrafish begin regular muscle contractions producing rhythmic swimming behavior, which is altered when the muscle is disrupted. Here we describe a touch-evoked response and locomotion assay to examine swimming performance as a measure of muscle function.

To assess the in vivo effects of therapeutic interventions for muscle disease, methods are needed to quantitate force generation and fatigability in treated muscle. We detail an approach to evaluating myo-mechanical properties in explanted mouse hindlimb muscle. This analysis provides a robust approach to quantitating the effects of genetic modification on muscle function, as well as comparison of therapies in mouse models of muscle disease.
