Posterior Revision Surgery

Posterior revision surgery is a repeat operation performed through the back to address persistent or recurrent problems after an earlier spinal procedure. Surgeons first evaluate the prior operation, spinal alignment, neural compression, bone healing, and implanted hardware, then remove or revise implants, decompress neural structures, repair nonunion, or extend spinal fusion as needed. The procedure is technically challenging because scar tissue and altered anatomy can increase surgical complexity and risk. In medicine, posterior revision surgery can relieve pain, restore stability, correct deformity, and improve neurological function when initial treatment has failed or complications such as hardware failure, infection, or adjacent-segment disease develop.

The monitoring of extracellular neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of freely moving animals offers insights on the link between neurotransmitter release and behavior. In vivo microdialysis coupled with electrochemical detection provides excellent anatomical and chemical resolution; and information on how basal neurotransmission is altered by pharmacological or physiological manipulations.

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

2023

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...

The goal of this protocol is to photochemically induce ischemic injury to the posterior optic nerve in rat. This model is critical to studies of the pathophysiology of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and therapeutic approaches for this and other optic neuropathies, as well as of other CNS ischemic diseases.
