Schirmer Test

The Schirmer test is a clinical method for estimating aqueous tear production and assessing whether the eyes produce enough tears to maintain the ocular surface. During testing, a narrow strip of calibrated filter paper is placed in the lower conjunctival sac, and tears travel along the strip by capillary action; the wetted length is measured after a standardized interval, commonly five minutes. Reduced wetting can support evaluation of dry eye disease, although results may be influenced by irritation, reflex tearing, medications, and testing conditions. In medicine, the test provides a simple, low-cost aid for diagnosing and monitoring tear-film disorders alongside symptoms and other ocular examinations.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.
