Sclera Translucency

Sclera translucency is the degree to which light passes through the eye’s normally opaque white outer coat, the sclera. Its appearance reflects how the tissue’s collagen architecture scatters and transmits light, with changes in thickness or organization potentially increasing visibility of structures beneath it. In medicine, assessing sclera translucency can aid description of ocular appearance and support research into structural changes affecting the eye. It is relevant when clinicians or researchers distinguish normal variation from findings associated with altered scleral integrity, although it should be interpreted alongside other examination findings.
