Fdg Tracer Administration

FDG tracer administration is the controlled delivery of fluorodeoxyglucose, a radiolabeled glucose analog, for measuring tissue glucose metabolism, particularly in the brain. After intravenous injection, FDG crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters cells through glucose transporters; hexokinase phosphorylates it, but subsequent metabolism is limited, causing the tracer to accumulate in proportion to glucose utilization during the uptake period. Positron emission tomography (PET) then detects the emitted radiation to map regional cerebral metabolic activity. In neuroscience, this approach supports studies of neural function, brain networks, neurodegenerative disease, epilepsy, and treatment-related metabolic changes.

[18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography is useful for studying glucose metabolism related to brain function. Here, we present a protocol for an [18F]FDG tracer set-up and semiquantitative assessment of the region-of-interest analysis for targeted brain areas associated with clinical manifestations in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

Small-animal positron emission tomography enables the assessment of the brain's two main energy substrates: glucose and ketones. In the present method, 11C-acetoacetate and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose are injected sequentially in each animal, and their uptake is measured quantitatively in specific brain regions determined from the magnetic resonance images.
