Muscles that Move the Arm

Os músculos do braço são categorizados em músculos axiais e escapulares.
Os dois músculos axiais são o peitoral maior e o grande dorsal.
O peitoral maior tem cabeças claviculares e esternocostais para flexão e extensão do braço, respectivamente. O grande dorsal estende o braço. Tanto o peitoral maior quanto o grande dorsal aduzem o braço e o giram medialmente.
Existem sete músculos escapulares. 
O redondo maior e o grande dorsal causam extensão, adução e rotação medial do braço.
Os músculos deltóides cobrem e moldam o ombro, permitindo a abdução, flexão, extensão e rotação medial e lateral do braço.
O supraespinhal na região escapular superior auxilia o deltóide na abdução do braço.
O infraespinhal na escápula posterior causa rotação lateral do braço.
 O redondo menor causa extensão e rotação lateral do braço junto com o infraespinhal.
O subescapular, localizado na superfície anterior da escápula, causa rotação medial do braço.
O supraespinhal, o infraespinhal, o redondo menor e o subescapular, juntamente com seus tendões correspondentes, combinam-se para criar o manguito rotador.
O coracobraquial, um músculo alongado do braço, ajuda na flexão e adução do braço.

Nove músculos estão envolvidos nos movimentos do braço. Dois deles, o peitoral maior e o grande dorsal, originam-se do esqueleto axial e são chamados de músculos axiais. Os outros sete originam-se da escápula e são chamados de músculos escapulares. 

O peitoral maior tem duas origens. Sua cabeça clavicular origina-se na metade medial da clavícula. Em contraste, a cabeça esternocostal origina-se nas cartilagens costais das costelas 1-6, no esterno e na aponeurose do oblíquo externo da parede abdominal anterior. Ambas as cabeças se fundem e se inserem no sulco intertubercular do úmero. Sua cabeça clavicular flexiona o úmero e a cabeça esternocostal estende um braço flexionado de volta à posição anatômica. O deltóide escapular é o músculo mais superficial da articulação do ombro e é responsável pelo seu formato arredondado. Suas fibras anteriores originam-se na lateral da clavícula – as fibras laterais originam-se do acrômio da escápula e as fibras posteriores originam-se da espinha da escápula. Todas as cabeças se fundem e se inserem na tuberosidade deltóide do úmero. Enquanto as fibras laterais abduzem o braço, as fibras anteriores flexionam-no e giram-no medialmente, e as fibras posteriores estendem-no e giram-no lateralmente. 

Os músculos escapulares – supraespinhal, infraespinhal, redondo menor, subescapular e seus tendões correspondentes se combinam para criar o manguito rotador. A origem do músculo supraespinhal encontra-se na fossa supraespinhal da escápula. Por outro lado, o músculo infraespinhal origina-se de sua fossa infraespinhal. Ambos os músculos estão inseridos no tubérculo maior do úmero, auxiliando na abdução do braço e na rotação lateral, respectivamente.

Outro músculo, o redondo menor, também se insere no tubérculo maior do úmero, mas se origina no ângulo inferior da escápula. Atua junto com o músculo infraespinhal para girar lateralmente e estender o braço. A origem do músculo subescapular está na fossa subescapular da escápula. Insere-se no tubérculo menor do úmero e auxilia na rotação medial do braço. Finalmente, o último músculo escapular envolvido nos movimentos do braço é o coracobraquial. A origem desse músculo está no processo coracóide da escápula e a inserção está na superfície média da diáfise medial do úmero. Ajuda na flexão e adução do braço.

Os músculos do manguito rotador são propensos a lesões, especialmente em pessoas que praticam esportes. Devido ao seu posicionamento entre a cabeça do úmero e o acrômio da escápula, o músculo supraespinhal é particularmente propenso a distensões e alterações degenerativas.

Arm muscles move the humerus through flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation. Nine muscles help produce these arm movements. Two of them, the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi, come from the axial skeleton. The other seven begin on the scapula and are called scapular muscles.

The pectoralis major has two origins, or heads. Its clavicular head starts on the medial half of the clavicle. Its sternocostal head starts on the costal cartilages of ribs 1 through 6, the sternum, and the aponeurosis of the external oblique of the anterior abdominal wall. Both heads join and insert on the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus. The clavicular head flexes the humerus. The sternocostal head brings a flexed arm back to anatomical position. Working together, the heads adduct and medially rotate the humerus.

The latissimus dorsi starts on the spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae T7 to T12, the crests of the sacrum and ilium, and ribs 9 to 12. It inserts on the front of the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus. The teres major works with it. Teres major begins at the inferior angle of the scapula and inserts on the medial lip of the intertubercular sulcus. These two muscles extend, adduct, and medially rotate the humerus.

The deltoid is the most superficial muscle of the shoulder joint, and it gives the shoulder its rounded shape. Its anterior fibers begin on the lateral part of the clavicle. Its lateral fibers begin on the acromion of the scapula, and its posterior fibers begin on the spine of the scapula. All three parts merge and insert on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. The lateral fibers abduct the arm. The anterior fibers flex and medially rotate it. The posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate it.

The scapular muscles also include the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis, and their tendons. Supraspinatus starts in the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus. It helps with arm abduction. Infraspinatus starts in the infraspinous fossa and also inserts on the greater tubercle. It helps with lateral rotation. Teres minor starts at the inferior angle of the scapula and inserts on the greater tubercle. It laterally rotates and extends the arm. Subscapularis starts in the subscapular fossa, inserts on the lesser tubercle of the humerus, and helps medially rotate the arm.

The last scapular muscle involved in arm movement is the coracobrachialis. It starts at the coracoid process of the scapula and inserts on the middle surface of the medial shaft of the humerus. It helps flex and adduct the arm. The rotator cuff muscles are often injured, especially in people who play sports. The supraspinatus is especially vulnerable because it sits between the head of the humerus and the acromion of the scapula, where strain and degenerative change can occur.
