Daily Non-invasive Monitoring

Daily non-invasive monitoring is the repeated assessment of biological changes without surgery, tissue removal, or other invasive procedures, enabling researchers to track immune and infectious processes over time. It works by collecting external or remotely detectable signals, such as changes in appearance, physiology, behavior, or other measurable indicators, and comparing serial observations to establish individual trends. In immunology and infection research, this approach can reveal disease progression, host responses, treatment effects, and recovery while reducing stress and experimental disruption. Frequent longitudinal measurements also improve temporal resolution, support earlier recognition of meaningful changes, and complement endpoint analyses that provide more limited snapshots of biological activity.

Non-invasive Monitoring and Imaging in Animal Research

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Non-invasive technologies support the principles of 3Rs by enabling repeated data collection from the same animal without the need for euthanasia at multiple time points. These approaches reduce the number of animals required...

Robotic-Guided Stereoelectroencephalography for Invasive Epilepsy Monitoring

2025

This protocol presents robot-assisted stereo electroencephalography (sEEG), a method for the stereotactic implantation of intracerebral electrodes used for invasive seizure monitoring in patients with refractory epilepsy. Techniques incorporating stereotactic robotic guidance for sEEG are safe and precise and may improve surgical efficiency, especially when implanting greater numbers of electrodes.

Fecal Glucocorticoid Analysis: Non-invasive Adrenal Monitoring in Equids

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

The presented approach simultaneously evaluates cancer cell invasion in 3D spheroid assays and T-cell cytotoxicity. Spheroids are generated in a scaffold-free agarose multi-microwell cast. Co-culture and embedding in type I collagen matrix are performed within the same device which allows to monitor cancer cell invasion and T-cell mediated cytotoxicity.
