Clinical Workflow

Clinical workflow is the organized sequence of tasks, decisions, and information exchanges that moves a patient through medical care, from initial assessment to follow-up. It works by coordinating healthcare professionals, clinical data, documentation, and decision points so that each action occurs in an appropriate order and supports the next step in care. In medicine, analyzing and improving clinical workflows can clarify responsibilities, reduce delays and duplication, strengthen communication, and support safer, more consistent delivery of diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring across clinical settings.

Here, we present a protocol to enable whole-genome sequencing of bacterial sexually transmitted infections from clinical samples using target enrichment. This novel, syndromic panel-based method overcomes challenges of abundant human DNA and low bacterial loads, facilitating genomic surveillance for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, and Mycoplasma genitalium.

2026

This article presents standardized workflows for the photopic negative response (PhNR) and the Baby Vision Test, two underutilized but clinically valuable electrophysiological modalities, to reduce procedural variability and enhance their diagnostic utility in glaucoma and pediatric visual disorders.

Workflow for Automated Digital Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow Cytomorphology, With Consideration of Critical Cellular Misclassifications

2026

The workflow of automated digital cytomorphology of peripheral blood and bone marrow is described. After standardized smear preparation and staining, a scanner captures specimen images. AI-powered software locates, records, and preliminarily classifies nucleated cells, followed by expert review. The focus is on critical cellular misclassifications with potential for misdiagnosis.

Optimized Workflow for Iterative Bleaching Extends Multiplexity Imaging of Highly Autofluorescent Clinical Samples

Here, we present a protocol to harvest adherent cells from multi-layered flasks in a closed semi-automated manner using a counterflow centrifugation system. This protocol can be applied for harvesting both adherent and suspension cells from other cell expansion platforms with few modifications to the existing steps.
