Pre-clinical Studies

Preclinical studies are laboratory investigations conducted before human clinical trials to evaluate the safety, biological activity, and potential effectiveness of a drug, therapy, device, or other intervention. Researchers examine candidates in cell cultures, tissue systems, and animal models, measuring mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dose responses, and toxicity under controlled conditions. These studies help identify promising treatments, refine experimental designs, and determine whether an intervention meets preliminary criteria for clinical testing. In biology, preclinical research also reveals how diseases develop and how organisms respond to therapeutic strategies, while guiding risk assessment and the responsible use of resources in later-stage research.

Preclinical Development: Overview

2023

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...
