Streptococcus Salivarius Colonization

Streptococcus salivarius colonization is the establishment and persistence of this commensal bacterium in the human oral cavity, where it contributes to the structure and function of the oral microbiome. The process begins when S. salivarius adheres to surfaces such as the tongue and mucosa, then grows within saliva-rich microbial communities and competes with other organisms for nutrients and attachment sites. Its distribution and abundance can be influenced by oral hygiene, diet, saliva flow, and host conditions. Studying this colonization process helps researchers understand microbial community development, oral health, host-microbe interactions, and the potential use of beneficial bacteria in microbiome-based approaches.

Colonization of the murine nasopharynx with Streptococcus pneumoniae and the subsequent extraction of adherent or recruited cells is described. This technique involves flushing the nasopharynx and collection of the fluid through the nares and is adaptable for various readouts, including differential cell quantification and analysis of mRNA expression in situ.
