Sample Preparation Under Inert Conditions

Sample preparation under inert conditions is the handling and processing of chemical samples in an atmosphere that minimizes exposure to reactive oxygen, moisture, or other contaminants. Chemists achieve this control using dry inert gases such as nitrogen or argon, together with equipment including gloveboxes, sealed vessels, and Schlenk lines; repeated purging or vacuum backfilling replaces air before samples are opened or transferred. These practices help preserve air-sensitive reagents, prevent oxidation or hydrolysis, and improve the reliability of analytical measurements and synthetic reactions. In chemistry, inert-atmosphere preparation supports organometallic synthesis, catalyst handling, materials research, and accurate characterization of compounds that degrade under ambient conditions.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Sample preparation is the way in which a sample is treated to prepare for analysis. Careful sample preparation is critical in analytical chemistry to accurately generate either a standard or unknown sample for a chemical measurement. Errors in analytical chemistry methods are categorized as random or systematic. Random errors are errors due to change and are often due to noise in instrument. Systematic errors are due to...
