Lipid Profile Analysis

Lipid profile analysis is a laboratory assessment of blood lipids that helps evaluate cardiovascular health and identify abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. The test typically measures total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides in a blood sample, often after a specified period of fasting. Clinicians interpret these results alongside factors such as age, medical history, and cardiovascular risk to support prevention, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Serial testing can monitor responses to lifestyle changes or lipid-lowering therapy, making lipid profile analysis an important tool in clinical risk assessment and long-term disease management.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

This article describes a protocol for the extraction of translating ribosomes from eukaryotic cells. Once extracted, ribosomes are separated into monosomes and polyribosomes by sucrose gradient fractionation to allow different ribosomal populations to be analyzed. As such, this method is the gold standard for examining the regulation of translation.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

Lipid droplets are important organelles for the replication of several pathogens, including the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). We describe a method to isolate lipid droplets for quantitative mass spectrometry of associated proteins; it can be used under a variety of conditions, such as virus infection, environmental stress, or drug treatment.
