Endoparasite Screening

Endoparasite screening is the systematic detection of parasites that live inside a host, including their eggs, larvae, cysts, or adult forms, and supports diagnosis and infection control. Screening typically analyzes specimens such as stool, blood, or tissue using microscopic examination, concentration procedures, antigen detection, or nucleic acid amplification to identify parasite-specific structures or molecules. In immunology and infection research, these methods help characterize host–parasite interactions, distinguish active infection from exposure, and assess disease burden. Reliable screening guides treatment decisions, supports epidemiological surveillance, and improves studies of immune responses to parasitic disease.

2011

This article describes various procedures for screening rats and mice to detect endo- or ectoparasitism. Several diagnostic assays will be demonstrated, both those suitable for use on live animals and those used after euthanasia of the animal. Photographs to aid in identification of rat and mouse parasites will be included.

Genetic Screens

2023

Genetic screens are critical tools for defining gene function and understanding gene interactions. Screens typically involve mutating genes and then assessing the affected organisms for phenotypes of interest. The process can be “forward”, where mutations are generated randomly to identify unknown genes responsible for the phenotypes, or it can be “reverse”, where specific genes are targeted for mutation to observe what phenotypes are produced. Here, JoVE reviews various types of genetic...

Multi-enzyme Screening Using a High-throughput Genetic Enzyme Screening System

2016

This work presents a method of high-throughput screening using a universal genetic enzyme screening system that can be theoretically applied to over 200 enzymes. Here, the single screening system identifies three different enzymes (lipase, cellulase, and alkaline phosphatase) by simply changing the substrate used (p-nitrophenyl acetate, p-nitrophenyl-β-D-cellobioside, and phenyl phosphate).
