Junin Virus Candid 1

Junin virus Candid 1 is a live attenuated vaccine strain developed to prevent Argentine hemorrhagic fever, a severe infection caused by Junin virus. Its reduced virulence permits limited replication that presents viral antigens to the immune system, stimulating neutralizing antibodies and cellular immune responses without causing typical disease in vaccine recipients. In immunology and infection research, Candid 1 supports the study of arenavirus immunity, vaccine attenuation, and protective immune responses, while vaccination programs use it to reduce illness in endemic regions. Its development illustrates how attenuation can transform a pathogenic virus into an effective preventive tool.

Infection of human tissues with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ex vivo provides a valuable 3D model of virus pathogenesis. Here, we describe a protocol to process and infect tissue specimens from human tonsils and female genital mucosae with HIV-1 and maintain them in culture at the liquid-air interface.
