Blood Flow Analysis

Blood flow analysis is the quantitative assessment of blood movement through arteries, veins, and microvascular networks, helping clinicians and researchers evaluate circulation and tissue perfusion. Methods such as Doppler ultrasound infer velocity from frequency shifts produced when sound waves reflect from moving red blood cells, while magnetic resonance imaging and contrast angiography provide complementary measurements. These data reveal altered vessel resistance, obstruction, turbulence, or inadequate perfusion, supporting the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disorders. In research, blood flow analysis helps evaluate therapies and clarify how hemodynamics influence organ function.

Blood is pumped by the heart into the aorta, the largest artery in the body, and then into increasingly smaller arteries, arterioles, and capillaries. The velocity of blood flow decreases with increased cross-sectional blood vessel area. As blood returns to the heart through venules and veins, its velocity increases. The movement of blood is encouraged by smooth muscle in the vessel walls, the movement of skeletal muscle surrounding the vessels, and one-way valves that prevent backflow. Slow...

Many different methods exist for the measurement of extracellular vesicles (EVs) using flow cytometry (FCM). Several aspects should be considered when determining the most appropriate method to use. Two protocols for measuring EVs are presented, using either individual detection or a bead-based approach.
