Kidney Procurement

Kidney procurement is the surgical recovery of a donor kidney for transplantation, a critical step that preserves organ quality and supports treatment of end-stage renal disease. After donor death is determined and consent is confirmed, surgeons carefully dissect and remove the kidney with its renal artery, vein, ureter, and surrounding tissue, then flush it with cold preservation solution to reduce metabolic activity and ischemic injury. The organ is transported under hypothermic conditions or connected to machine perfusion before implantation in the recipient. Careful timing, sterile technique, vascular assessment, and preservation methods improve graft viability and transplant outcomes.

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...
