Lipid Loading

Lipid loading is the controlled introduction of lipids into cells or biological models to increase intracellular lipid content and study its pharmacological effects. In cell-based experiments, fatty acids or lipid-containing complexes enter cells, undergo uptake and metabolic processing, and may accumulate as neutral lipids within lipid droplets, producing a defined model of lipid stress or storage. Researchers use lipid loading to investigate drug-induced steatosis, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and cellular toxicity, while testing compounds that alter lipid uptake, synthesis, breakdown, or transport. These models help connect molecular mechanisms with disease-relevant responses and support pharmacological safety and efficacy studies.

Structure of Lipids

2020

Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds. Non-polar molecules are hydrophobic (“water fearing”), or insoluble in water. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals. For example, they help keep aquatic birds and...
