Each vital sign has its own method. Temperature can be taken with an oral, rectal, tympanic membrane, axillary, or temporal artery thermometer, depending on the patient and the situation. Before recording temperature, a nurse should also find out whether fever-reducing medicine was taken recently.

Blood pressure is measured with a sphygmomanometer, and the cuff should be fully deflated before use.
