Here are some patterns of fever.
An Intermittent fever involves periodic occurrences of fever and normal or subnormal temperature.
Likewise, a remittent fever is characterized by more than two degrees of Fahrenheit temperature fluctuations between morning and evening that do not reach normal levels.
A constant or continuous fever is when the temperature remains high and fluctuates by less than 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
A Relapsing fever is characterized by recurrent episodes of fever where the body temperature normalizes for at least a day and relapses soon after.
An Inverse fever is when the body temperature peaks in the morning and decreases by evening.
A Lysis fever involves temperature fluctuation in a zig-zag pattern for a few days, sometimes up to a week, before returning to normal levels.
Similarly, a crisis fever occurs when the body temperature rapidly drops after prolonged high temperatures.
A crisis fever is categorized as true or false. In a true crisis, the patient&#39;s condition improves; in a false crisis, it does not.
Lastly, a fever of unknown origin lasts for weeks to months and has no apparent cause.

Before understanding the types and patterns of fever, it is essential to know its phases.
<ul>
	<li>&#8226; The first stage is the onset/invasion phase, during which the body temperature rises. It might be a sudden or gradual process.</li>
	<li>&#8226;&#160;The second stage is the steady phase, during which the body temperature has reached its maximum and remains constant at a high level.</li>
	<li>&#8226;&#160;The third stage is the defervescence or decline phase, during which the elevated temperature returns to normal. The fever may subside suddenly or gradually.</li>
</ul>
&#160;Fever occurs in various types and patterns. Let us examine them one by one.
<ol>
	<li>Intermittent or quotidian fever: The body temperature regularly fluctuates between periods of fever and normal or subnormal temperature. This frequency might range from a few hours to three days. The temperature is usually higher in the evening than in the morning. Example: Malaria, which is known for its characteristic intermittent fever.</li>
	<li>Remittent fever: temperature fluctuates more than two degrees between morning and evening but does not reach usual. Example: Infections like pneumonia and endocarditis are known to cause remittent fever.</li>
	<li>Constant or continuous fever: The body temperature remains continuously high and changes by under 2 degrees Celsius. Example: Typhoid fever is a common cause of constant or continuous fever.</li>
	<li>Relapsing fever is characterized by a temporary return to average body temperature for at least one day, followed by the subsequent recurrence of fever. Example: Tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease can cause relapsing fever.</li>
	<li>Crisis: Fever comes to normal after a few hours or days of being extremely high. There are two types of crises: true and false crises. In a true crisis, the temperature drops abruptly within a few hours and returns to normal, accompanied by a significant improvement in the patient&#39;s health, for example, fever seen in malaria. In a false crisis, the patient&#39;s overall condition does not appear to improve. It might be a warning sign rather than a sign of progress&#8212;for example, patients with tuberculosis.</li>
	<li>Lysis: The temperature drops in a zig-zag pattern for two or three days or a week before returning to normal, when the other symptoms gradually fade. Example: Dengue fever is known for its lysis stage, where the patient&#39;s temperature drops for a few days before returning to normal.</li>
	<li>Inverse fever: the maximum temperature range is recorded in the morning and the lowest in the evening, which is opposed to the typical course of fever. Example: In some cases of malaria, the patient may experience an inverse fever due to the malaria parasite&#39;s life cycle, which causes a spike in body temperature during its reproductive stage at night.</li>
	<li>Hectic or swinging fever: this type of fever occurs when the gap between the high and low points is relatively high. Example: Typhoid fever is characterized by a hectic or swinging fever</li>

Fever has clear phases and several temperature patterns. The first phase is the onset or invasion phase, when body temperature begins to rise. This rise may happen suddenly or gradually.

The second phase is the steady phase. During this stage, body temperature reaches its highest point and stays constant at a high level. The third phase is the defervescence or decline phase. In this stage, the elevated temperature returns to normal, either suddenly or gradually.

Fever may appear as intermittent or quotidian fever. In this pattern, body temperature shifts regularly between fever and normal or subnormal levels. The cycle may last from a few hours to three days, and the temperature is usually higher in the evening than in the morning. Malaria is a common example.

Remittent fever shows wider daily changes. The temperature fluctuates by more than two degrees between morning and evening, but it does not return to normal. Pneumonia and endocarditis can cause this pattern. Constant or continuous fever is different because the body temperature stays high and changes by less than 2 degrees Celsius. Typhoid fever is a common example.

Relapsing fever includes a return to average temperature for at least one day, followed by fever again. Tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease can cause this pattern. Fever may also end by crisis or lysis. In a true crisis, the temperature drops sharply within a few hours and the patient improves quickly. In a false crisis, the patient does not seem to improve, and the change may be a warning sign. Tuberculosis can show a false crisis.

Lysis means the temperature falls in a zig-zag pattern for two or three days or even a week before returning to normal. The other symptoms fade gradually. Dengue fever is an example. Inverse fever is the opposite of the usual pattern, with the highest temperature in the morning and the lowest in the evening. Some cases of malaria show this pattern because of the parasite life cycle at night. Hectic or swinging fever has a large gap between high and low temperatures, and typhoid fever can also show this pattern.
