Let us understand how to assess temporal artery temperature using a temporal artery thermometer.
Before measuring the temperature, perform hand hygiene and don a fresh pair of gloves to avoid cross-infection.
First, explain the procedure to the patient and then check for moisture on their forehead.
If moisture is present, gently wipe it away, as it might interfere with the thermometer sensors.
Place the thermometer firmly on the patient&#39;s forehead to avoid interference with ambient temperature.
Gently press the scan button. Glide the thermometer slowly across the forehead while ensuring the sensor remains flat and firmly in contact with the skin.
While pressing the scan button, gently lift the sensor after sweeping it across the forehead. Then, touch the sensor on the neck, just behind the earlobe.
During the scanning process, wait until the clicking sound stops, then proceed to read the temperature. When finished, release the scan button.
Disinfect the thermometer with an alcohol swab and replace the equipment.
Remove the gloves, perform hand hygiene, and document the readings.

Step 6: After scanning the forehead, move the thermometer to the area behind the earlobe, specifically in the depression below the mastoid, to verify the reading. Ensure the area is free from hair and other obstructions, such as earrings.
Step 7: Listen for a click or beep sound, which signals the completion of the temperature measurement. This sound indicates that the thermometer has finished scanning and the temperature is ready to be read.
Step 8: Read and note the temperature displayed on the thermometer and record this measurement in the patient&#39;s medical record, along with the time and date of assessment.
Step 9: Clean the thermometer using an alcohol swab or according to the healthcare facility&#39;s disinfection protocols.
Step 10: Safely dispose of the gloves and perform hand hygiene.
Step 11: Document the procedure. It is essential to ensure the temperature reading and any relevant observations are promptly and accurately documented in the patient&#39;s medical record. This is crucial for continuity of care and ensures that the patient&#39;s health status is always up to date.

Temporal artery temperature scanning is a quick way to check a patient’s body temperature with a temporal artery thermometer. The process begins with hand hygiene and a fresh pair of gloves to help prevent cross-infection and keep the patient safe. The procedure should also be explained clearly so the patient knows what to expect and can cooperate with comfort.

Before scanning, the forehead should be checked for moisture. If the skin is wet, it should be gently wiped with a clean cloth because moisture can affect the accuracy of the reading. The thermometer is then placed at the center of the forehead, away from hair or clothing, to reduce interference.

Next, the scan button is pressed. The thermometer is slowly glided across the forehead toward the ear, usually to one side only, while the sensor stays flat and in direct contact with the skin. After that, the thermometer is moved behind the earlobe into the depression below the mastoid, where the area should be clear of hair and obstructions such as earrings.

A click or beep signals that the measurement is complete. The temperature can then be read from the display and recorded in the patient’s medical record with the time and date.
