Here is a guide on measuring axillary temperature with a digital thermometer.
Before measuring the temperature, perform hand hygiene and put on a clean pair of gloves.
First, prepare the patient by explaining the procedure, providing privacy, ensuring the axilla is exposed, and explaining that a correct reading requires minimal movement.
Next, position the patient by having them lie on their back with their arm slightly elevated and the elbow flexed.
For accurate results and to lower the risk of infection, clean the armpit using an alcohol swab and allow it to dry naturally.
To take a reading, place the digital thermometer in the armpit, then have the patient hold their arm across their torso while resting their hand on or above the opposite shoulder. Offer assistance if needed.
Remove the thermometer upon hearing the beep sound, note the reading, and clean it with an alcohol swab.
Ensure patient comfort during and after temperature assessment by close monitoring.
Lastly, remove the gloves, perform hand hygiene, and document the procedure.

Step 3: Adjust the patient&#8217;s clothing to expose only the axilla. It minimizes exposure while keeping the patient warm.
Step 4: Remove the thermometer probe from its recording unit. Attach a disposable probe cover securely to prevent contamination.
Step 5: To place the thermometer correctly, raise the patient&#39;s arm away from their torso to expose the axilla. Place the thermometer&#39;s probe in the center of the axilla, the deepest part, for the most accurate reading.
Step 6: Instruct the patient to lower their arm and press it close to the body to surround the probe with skin, ensuring a reliable measurement.
Step 6: Hold the probe in place until a beep sound is heard, indicating that the measurement is complete. Carefully remove the probe and note the temperature.
Step 7: Post-Measurement, cover the patient, dispose of the probe cover by ejecting it directly into a waste receptacle to avoid reuse, and replace the thermometer in the charging unit to prepare it for next use.
Step 8: Remove the gloves and perform hand hygiene to prevent infection and document the findings. Inform the provider if any abnormality was detected during the procedure.

Axillary body temperature is checked with a digital thermometer using a careful, step-by-step method. The goal is to get an accurate reading from the axilla, or underarm area, while keeping the patient comfortable and protected.

Hand hygiene comes first, followed by clean gloves to help prevent infection and cross-contamination. The patient is then told what will happen so they can cooperate with the procedure. Privacy is maintained, only the axilla is exposed, and the patient is asked to stay still for the most accurate result.

The thermometer probe is removed from its recording unit and fitted with a disposable probe cover. The patient’s arm is lifted away from the body so the probe can be placed in the center of the axilla, which is the deepest part of the area. The arm is then lowered and held close to the body so skin surrounds the probe and supports a reliable measurement.

The probe stays in place until the thermometer beeps to show the reading is complete. The probe is removed, the temperature is noted, and the patient is covered again. The probe cover is ejected into a waste receptacle, the thermometer is returned to its charging unit, and the gloves are removed. Hand hygiene is performed again, the result is documented, and the provider is informed if anything abnormal is found.
