The Muscular System

The muscular system includes the skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles that coordinate with each other to carry out functions like movement, digestion, and circulation.
Of the three muscle types, the skeletal muscles are the most predominant.
They form the musculoskeletal system, a complex network of muscles, bones, and associated connective tissues that produce voluntary movements, such as standing, walking, or running.
When a skeletal muscle contracts, it generates force to move one of the articulating bones while keeping the other relatively stationary.
Let&#39;s consider the example of the biceps brachii. Its two proximal ends called the origins, are attached to the scapula, a stationary bone.
In contrast, the distal end called the insertion, is attached to a movable bone, which is the radius in this case.
The muscle&#39;s origin and insertion are separated by a fleshy region called the belly or the gaster.
During elbow flexion, the origin of the bicep pins the muscle to the stationary bone,&#160; supporting its insertion to pull the radius for movement.

The muscular system is essential to the body&#39;s overall structure and function, playing a crucial role in movement, stability, and internal processes. It consists of three distinct types of muscle tissue: the skeletal, the smooth, and the cardiac muscles.

	<li>Skeletal Muscles: These muscles are under our conscious control and enable movement. They are attached to bones by tendons, and their contraction and relaxation allow us to move. Additionally, they generate heat during physical activity, helping maintain body temperature.</li>
	<li>Smooth Muscles: Unlike skeletal muscles, smooth muscles operate without conscious control. They are located in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach, intestines, blood vessels, and airways. The contraction of these muscles aids in processes like digestion, by propelling food through the gastrointestinal tract.</li>
	<li>Cardiac Muscle: Found exclusively in the heart, this type of muscle contracts rhythmically and continuously, pumping blood throughout the body without fatigue.</li>

The Musculoskeletal System
As the name suggests, the musculoskeletal system is a complex network of muscles and bones. It is critical in facilitating movement and providing structural support to the body.
The skeletal component of the system is primarily made up of bones and associated elements like cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Bones provide our bodies with basic structure and shape and protect vital organs. For instance, the skull shields the brain, while the ribcage safeguards the heart and lungs. The cartilage, tendons, and ligaments further aid mobility and stability by connecting bones and cushioning joints.
The muscular component, on the other hand, consists of various types of muscle tissues. These include skeletal muscles, which are directly attached to bones and are responsible for voluntary movements such as walking or lifting; smooth muscles, which control involuntary actions like digestion and blood flow; and cardiac muscle, found only in the heart, which pumps blood throughout the body. Together, the muscular and skeletal components work harmoniously to allow locomotor functions.

The muscular system helps the body move, stay stable, and carry out internal work. It includes three kinds of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle. Each type has a different role in the body.

Skeletal muscles are under conscious control, so people can move them on purpose. They attach to bones by tendons, and their contraction and relaxation make actions like walking and lifting possible. These muscles also produce heat during physical activity, which helps maintain body temperature.

Smooth muscles work without conscious control. They are found in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach, intestines, blood vessels, and airways. Their contractions help move food through the digestive tract and support other internal functions like blood flow.

Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. It contracts in a rhythmic pattern and keeps pumping blood throughout the body without fatigue. Together, skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle support movement, circulation, and other life processes.

The musculoskeletal system brings muscles and bones together. It includes bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, and it gives the body shape and support. Bones also protect vital organs. The skull shields the brain, and the ribcage protects the heart and lungs.

Cartilage, tendons, and ligaments help joints stay stable and move smoothly. Cartilage cushions joints, tendons connect muscles to bones, and ligaments connect bones to other bones. Working together, the muscular and skeletal parts of the musculoskeletal system allow locomotor functions.

Content elaboration: The integumentary system consists of skin and accessory structures. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (subcutaneous layer). The accessory structures can include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles, hair follicles and nails. Skin functions include protection, temperature regulation, excretion and sensory perception. These occur through the processes of perspiration, skin production and shedding, vitamin D synthesis and repair. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, burns, skin cancer, anhidrosis, acne, eczema or scleroderma. Investigations are used to understand and explain the integumentary system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

There are four main cell types that compose bone tissue, each with a specific function: osteogenic cells, osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The microscopic anatomy of compact bone includes osteons. Bones are classified by their shape. The structure of a typical long bone can be explored. Specific bones of the skeleton can be studied by their subdivisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Cartilage is found in areas of the nose, ears, ribs and joints. Joints can be classified by structure or by function. The general structure of synovial joints may be explored. Ligaments connect bone to bone, stabilizing joints. The skeletal system provides support for the human body, protects soft organs, allows for movement due to attachment of muscles, stores minerals and fat and forms blood cells. Processes of the skeletal system include hematopoiesis, ossification and bone growth and remodeling. A comparison of male to female, juvenile to adult or human to other vertebrate skeletons may be explored. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, osteoporosis, malnutrition, fractures, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and arthritis. Investigations are used to understand and explain the skeletal system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
