Microfabricated devices have become foundational tools in modern bioengineering, enabling precise control over cellular microenvironments, spatiotemporal delivery of biochemical cues, and high-resolution interrogation of biological systems. Advances in soft lithography, 3D microprinting, nanofabrication, and hybrid material integration have accelerated the development of organ-on-chip platforms, microfluidic biosensors, implantable microsystems, bioMEMS, and lab-on-chip technologies for diagnostics, drug screening, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. As biological research increasingly demands physiologically relevant, scalable, and data-rich platforms, microfabricated systems are bridging engineering innovation with translational biomedical applications.
Despite remarkable progress, significant challenges remain. Reproducibility across laboratories, standardization of fabrication protocols, material biocompatibility, long-term device stability, and integration of multimodal sensing continue to limit broader adoption. Scaling prototypes to manufacturable and clinically compliant systems presents regulatory and engineering hurdles. Furthermore, coupling microdevices with advanced imaging, real-time analytics, artificial intelligence, and multi-omics workflows requires interdisciplinary optimization. Addressing variability in biological responses within microengineered environments also remains a critical scientific concern.
This Collection aims to provide a comprehensive platform for methods articles detailing diverse fabrication strategies; original research articles demonstrating novel device applications and validation studies, and review articles synthesizing emerging trends and translational pathways.
By integrating methodological rigor with experimental validation and reviews, this Collection will serve as a forward-looking resource that fosters standardization, encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration, and accelerates the translation of microfabricated bioengineering technologies from bench to bedside.
